Ghost 1.0 for the Nintendo Switch Review: Don’t Ghost on this One

Ghost 1.0 was unlike the games I have played before. Not having played any platformer games before, I wasn’t too sure on what I was expecting. Whatever those expectations were, Ghost 1.0 blew them away. It has an intriguing story, great characters, and plenty of guns, robots, and explosions.

It starts with two guys, Jacker and Boogan, two geeks with money hiring Ghost to control an android that has been snuck into the Nakamura Corporation’s space station. Their goal? Find and steal Nakamura’s A.I. Algorithm. You control Ghost, sneaking around and shooting stuff to make them blow up. Boxes, robots, turrets, even the walls in certain areas. They all explode. It’s so great. Explore the massive Nakamura Space Station, taking out the station’s defensives, and finding key card parts to unlock the next area.

There a quite a few cutscenes in the beginning, but you can either add subtitles, as it may be difficult to hear them if you’re in a loud room, or just skip the cutscenes altogether. The voice acting is great, and the characters and their interactions are funny and the story is interesting. I won’t say too much about the story, but it is told through the cutscenes and slowly goes from stealing the A.I. to so much more. Jacker and Boogan’s personalities are shown throughout bits of banter and cutscenes, along with their past. That part is also accompanied by a silly and entertaining mini game.

The sheer amount of guns, secondary guns, items, power ups, upgrades, and skills that you can find/unlock/buy in Ghost 1.0 is part of the game that I really, really, love. There are more than enough to suit you and your style. Weapons can be leveled up, and there are multiples for power ups and upgrades which stack up rather nicely. Drones, machine guns, extra shots, side shots, shockwave jumps, and different armor upgrades, are just some of the many extras that I have on. Each gun has a different amount of ammo, but it recharges automatically. “Geeks” are hidden throughout, and are references to other movies and games that just change little details that you need to find when turned on.

Alarm phases are set in certain rooms where you must defeat waves of enemies until Jacker can hack and shut off the alarms. Certain skills are only active during these phases. Each time you set off an alarm, the difficulty of that area increases.

To save the game and heal, rooms with 3D printers are littered throughout the map. If you are destroyed, the last room you saved in is where your android is printed. As Jacker put it, “It’s like having infinite lives!” which I thought was clever, a little funny, and unique.

The bosses at the end of each area are challenging. I found myself frustrated and repeatedly dying. They’re all different and difficult, but to an extent that makes you rethink your strategy (or lack thereof) to beat them. Sometimes, you might need to stop, get new weapons or upgrades, and try again. In the end, they all explode quite brilliantly making you feel very victorious once you’ve won.

I love Ghost 1.0. The story has me completely hooked, the alarms and bosses are challenging but not stupidly difficult, and the characters are funny and entertaining. Even the enemy robots had silly conversations that made me chuckle, before I destroyed them. It’s a fantasticly amazing game that I will most definitely continue to play.
